Sibling Journeys

November 27, 2024 by Frank Golden

For many Intended Parents, welcoming a child through surrogacy is a life-changing experience, and sometimes, it’s so rewarding that they choose to embark on a sibling journey. In fact, about 20-30% of the families we’ve helped at Golden return to grow their families even further. And while the idea of adding another child brings excitement, it can also come with some big questions. What will this journey look like? What about the financial commitment? How can you prepare emotionally? And should you work with the same Surrogate?

If you’re considering a sibling journey, here are some of the most important questions to ask as you explore the possibility of expanding your family.

Sibling journey through surrogacy

Question #1: Are You Ready Emotionally?

First things first: are you and your support network ready for the emotional aspects of another surrogacy journey? If you have a partner, reflect on how your first journey and the arrival of your child impacted your relationship. Did it bring you closer together, or were there unexpected challenges? If you’re navigating this path solo, think about the strength of your support network. Are they prepared to stand by you through another round?

If you’re uncertain, talking with a therapist or counselor can be a great way to help you explore your feelings. This mental health support can bring clarity as you begin a sibling journey with a clear head. With a child already in your life, emotional support is more important than ever as the stakes are higher, and having a healthy foundation is essential for everyone’s well-being.

Question #2: Are You Ready Financially?

Let’s talk about finances. Adding another child is a significant decision, and financial planning is key. Beyond the surrogacy expenses, think about the long-term responsibilities of raising two kids through different stages of life, from early childhood to college. It’s worth looking closely at your financial situation and considering what feels comfortable for your family.

Financial planning for surrogacy

As you begin planning this second journey, it’s helpful to consider some costs that may not have come up the first time around. In my Surrogacy Talk, Additional Surrogacy Costs, I break down these often-overlooked expenses that can catch many Intended Parents by surprise.

Question #3: What’s the Ideal Age Gap for Your Family?

One question that often comes up with sibling journeys is timing: How soon should we get started if we want our kids close in age? Or maybe the opposite: Is a bigger age gap actually a good thing?

Speaking from my own experience, our kids have a four-year gap, which has been a great balance for us. Our daughter, Sophia, now 12, loves looking out for her little brother, Silas, who’s eight. She helps him with homework, shares responsibilities around the house, and even mentors him in school. It is a dynamic we hadn’t fully anticipated, but it’s been such a positive outcome of waiting a little longer between children.

So, if you’re not able to start your sibling journey right away, don’t worry, a bigger age gap can come with its own set of advantages. Additionally, when your second child arrives, you’ll be too busy soaking in the joy to wonder if they “should have” been born earlier.

Making the Transition Smooth for the Whole Family

A sibling journey is more than just adding another child, it’s about making sure everyone feels ready and supported for what’s ahead. Think about how you can prepare your first child for becoming an older sibling. Building excitement and a sense of positivity around their new role can make the transition smoother and foster a healthy dynamic.
