Support Starts Before Pregnancy

Do Surrogates Get Paid Before Pregnancy?

Yes. Golden Surrogates receive $12,500 of their standard compensation and benefits before pregnancy is confirmed. Golden designed this payment schedule to recognize that a Surrogate’s commitment begins well before pregnancy. Matching, legal preparation, medications, appointments, and embryo transfer require meaningful time, effort, preparation, and personal commitment.

Golden’s $12,500 pre-pregnancy payment structure is among the most substantial exact pre-pregnancy benefits publicly disclosed by leading U.S. surrogacy agencies.

Comparison based on publicly available agency compensation schedules reviewed in August 2026. Programs, amounts, and eligibility requirements may change.

  • First two $500 monthly benefits$1,000
  • Medication start fee$1,500
  • Embryo transfer fee$1,500

The $12,500 is included within Golden’s $20,000 standard benefits package and $70,000 minimum total compensation. It is not an additional amount added to the advertised package.

Included for Every Surrogate

Standard Golden Benefits, Accounted in Full

Golden’s standard benefits package includes fourteen $500 monthly benefits, totaling $7,000. Monthly benefits begin when the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement is completed. Payments continue during the journey and through six weeks after a vaginal delivery or eight weeks after a C-section, according to the agreement. If the journey takes longer after legal completion, additional monthly benefits may continue according to the agreement. Fourteen payments are included in the standard package calculation, but they are not necessarily a maximum.

The first two $500 monthly benefits are already included in the $12,500 subtotal above, so no payment is counted twice.

  • Pre-pregnancy benefits detailed above$12,500
  • Twelve additional $500 monthly benefits included in the standard package$6,000
  • Maternity clothing allowance$1,500

Total Standard Golden Benefits$20,000

When additional monthly benefits apply because a journey continues beyond the standard anticipated timeline, those payments are made in addition to the advertised $70,000 minimum and are not included in the standard $20,000 benefits calculation.

Maternity insurance, life insurance, reimbursed expenses, and conditional payments are not included in the $20,000 standard benefits total. They are described separately below.

Documented and Protected

How Compensation and Coverage Are Protected

Your compensation is not an informal promise. It is a contract term, funded in advance and released on an agreed schedule, alongside insurance protections paid on your behalf.

Written into your agreement

Compensation and approved expense terms are established in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement before the medical protocol begins.

Funded through independent escrow

The Intended Parents fund an independent escrow account, and payments are issued according to the schedule established in the agreement. Golden’s complete guide to surrogacy escrow explains how the accounts work.

Coordinated by Golden

Golden reviews the structure with you, helps you submit approved expenses correctly, and keeps timing on track. Golden does not hold, control, or disburse escrow funds. Approved expenses may require documentation such as paystubs, schedules, or receipts.

Independent legal representation

You receive independent legal representation, paid for by the Intended Parents, to review and negotiate the agreement on your behalf.

Maternity insurance protection

Golden pays for an expert review of your existing health-insurance policy. If no applicable policy exists or the policy excludes surrogacy, the Intended Parents purchase appropriate maternity coverage. The Surrogate pays nothing.

Life insurance protection

Golden arranges the highest life-insurance coverage available to each Surrogate, with a required minimum of $750,000 for her chosen beneficiary or beneficiaries. Coverage costs the Surrogate nothing and takes effect before embryo-transfer medications or treatment begin.

When separate maternity coverage is needed, it may represent approximately $15,000 to $45,000 in coverage costs paid on the Surrogate’s behalf. This is an insurance benefit, not cash compensation, and it is not included in the advertised $70,000 compensation package.

Paid in Addition to Compensation

Incidentals and Reimbursed Expenses

These payments are separate from the $70,000 minimum standard compensation. In addition to base compensation and standard benefits, the Intended Parents cover legal fees, medical bills, mileage, childcare for qualifying appointments, lost wages, approved travel, and other reimbursable costs outlined in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. Amounts depend on the circumstances of your journey.

The Intended Parents also cover the following costs. These are paid on the Surrogate’s behalf or reimbursed to her, and they are not cash compensation.

  • Surrogacy-related medical bills
  • Deductibles and copayments where applicable

Uncommon Medical Circumstances

Rare Circumstances

Some medical events are uncommon, and Golden still writes protection for them into the agreement in advance. These are contractual protections, not bonuses, and they are not counted in the advertised minimum total compensation.

Transparent by Design

A Clear Standard From the Beginning

Golden separates standard compensation from conditional payments so prospective Surrogates can understand what is routinely included without relying on rare medical events or unusual circumstances to produce a larger advertised number.

When an agency does not publish exact compensation amounts or payment timing, ask for the complete written benefit package and payment schedule before comparing advertised totals.

Compensation and Payment Timing

How much do Golden Surrogates get paid?

First-time Golden Surrogates receive a minimum total of $70,000, which includes $50,000 in base compensation and $20,000 in standard Golden benefits. Experienced Surrogates receive an additional $5,000 in base compensation. Approved reimbursements, such as travel, childcare, and documented lost wages, are funded separately by the Intended Parents and are not counted inside the $70,000 minimum.

If you are also wondering what agencies look for in a strong candidate, read What Makes a Good Surrogate? Qualities Agencies Look For.

What is the difference between base compensation and total compensation?

Base compensation is the $50,000 paid to a first-time Surrogate for carrying the pregnancy. Total compensation is that base amount plus the $20,000 standard Golden benefits package, for a $70,000 minimum. Benefits include items such as the monthly benefit, the medication start fee, the embryo transfer fee, and the maternity clothing allowance. Reimbursed expenses and conditional medical-event payments are separate and are not counted in the minimum total, so the published figure reflects what a first-time Surrogate can routinely expect rather than a best-case estimate.

Do Golden Surrogates receive compensation before pregnancy is confirmed?

Yes. Under Golden’s standard anticipated timeline, Surrogates receive $12,500 of their standard compensation and benefits before pregnancy is confirmed. This consists of a $500 matching bonus, the first two $500 monthly benefits, a $1,500 medication start fee, a $1,500 embryo transfer fee, and an $8,000 milestone bonus for legal completion and the first embryo transfer. The $12,500 is included within Golden’s $20,000 standard benefits package and is not added on top of the $70,000 minimum. Monthly benefits begin at legal completion and may continue beyond the fourteen payments used in the standard package calculation if the journey takes longer.

When and how is Surrogate compensation paid?

Golden’s $50,000 first-time base compensation is paid in ten equal milestone payments according to the schedule established in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. Benefits begin earlier, at matching and legal completion, which is why $12,500 is paid before pregnancy is confirmed. Compensation, benefits, and approved expense terms are confirmed before the medical protocol begins. Intended Parents fund an independent escrow account, which releases payments according to the agreement. Golden coordinates the process but does not hold, control, or disburse escrow funds.

Do experienced Surrogates receive more compensation?

Yes. Golden’s current published compensation structure provides experienced Surrogates with an additional $5,000 in base compensation, bringing base compensation to $55,000 and the standard minimum total to $75,000 with the $20,000 benefits package. An experienced Surrogate is one who has previously completed a gestational surrogacy journey. Individual terms may also be discussed when appropriate, and any accepted terms are documented in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement.

Can a Golden Surrogate request different compensation terms?

Yes, in appropriate circumstances. Golden publishes one standard first-time compensation structure so every applicant can compare the program clearly rather than guessing what she might be offered. A qualified Surrogate may request or negotiate individual terms before matching, and Golden will review the request in context. Not every requested amount is accepted. Any accepted change is disclosed before match presentation, so Intended Parents review the actual terms, and the final figures appear in the signed Gestational Surrogacy Agreement that governs every payment.

Does compensation depend on my state, insurance, or employment?

No. Golden’s standard first-time compensation structure is not reduced based on your state of residence, insurance coverage, or employment status. Some agencies quote a lower figure to applicants who live in less expensive regions or who do not have employer coverage. Golden does not. Your state and your policy still affect journey logistics and the insurance review, but they do not change the published $70,000 minimum for a first-time Surrogate.

Do I still receive compensation if an embryo transfer does not result in pregnancy?

Yes, for the milestones you have already completed. Golden Surrogates keep the applicable pre-pregnancy payments they have earned, including the matching bonus, monthly benefits paid to date, the $1,500 medication start fee, the $1,500 embryo transfer fee, and the $8,000 legal-completion and first-transfer bonus once those milestones are completed. The $8,000 payout is not contingent on a successful pregnancy. It is included in the $12,500 paid through the standard pre-pregnancy milestones. Monthly benefits begin after legal completion and may continue when the journey extends beyond the standard anticipated timeline, according to the agreement. Whether an additional transfer occurs, and what is paid for it, is determined by the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement and the arrangements made with your Intended Parents.

What happens to my compensation if a pregnancy ends early or I deliver before the expected date?

Payments you have already earned for completed milestones are not erased. The Gestational Surrogacy Agreement establishes the applicable base-compensation schedule in these circumstances, along with payments tied to medical events, recovery support, reimbursements, and any future journey options. Golden’s published structure includes contractual protections for pregnancy loss, medically necessary procedures, counseling support, and recovery time, and those amounts are listed in the rare-circumstances disclosure above. Because each situation differs, the precise amounts and timing are governed by your signed agreement and funded through escrow rather than by a fixed public formula.

What compensation and benefits may continue after delivery?

Postpartum support continues after the baby goes home. The $500 monthly allowance continues through six weeks after a vaginal delivery or eight weeks after a C-section, according to the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement.

Breastmilk pumping, when mutually agreed upon, is compensated at $350 per week plus applicable shipping and supplies. Golden also offers an optional counseling benefit of up to $1,000 for actual expenses. For New York journeys, this cap does not limit required counseling access. If the benefit is exhausted, the Intended Parents pay additional required counseling costs through escrow under the agreement. Qualifying lost wages, childcare, medical expenses, and other recovery protections follow the agreement whether or not you pump.

Lost Wages and Family Protection

When are a Surrogate's lost wages reimbursed?

Golden reimburses documented gross lost wages when qualifying surrogacy appointments, journey travel, medically directed work restrictions, delivery recovery, or other circumstances are covered by the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. Reimbursement is verified using applicable paystubs and work schedules, so the payment reflects income you actually missed. Not every missed workday automatically qualifies, and the qualifying events, documentation requirements, and any applicable limitations are established in your agreement. Golden uses documented gross wages rather than an estimated net figure, which is explained in why Golden reimburses gross wages.

Are my spouse or partner's lost wages covered during a surrogacy journey?

Yes, in qualifying circumstances. Golden’s published compensation structure includes reimbursement of documented gross lost wages for a spouse or partner when the circumstances are covered by the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement, such as accompanying you to a covered appointment or supporting you during a covered recovery period. Applicable paystubs and work schedules are used to verify the income that was actually missed. This protection matters because a journey should not cost your household income. The specific qualifying events, documentation requirements, timing, and any applicable contractual limitations are established in the agreement rather than set by a fixed public cap.

How are lost wages documented if I am salaried, hourly, self-employed, or have variable income?

Documentation depends on how you are paid. Hourly and salaried applicants generally document missed income through applicable paystubs, work schedules, and employer records showing the shifts or days affected. Self-employed, commission-based, gig, and variable-income applicants may be asked for additional records sufficient to document actual income loss, which can include invoices, client contracts, platform earnings statements, bank records, or tax documentation. Golden does not apply a single assumed daily rate to every applicant. The final reimbursement method and the documentation you must provide are established in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement before your journey begins.

How do paid time off, disability benefits, or other wage-replacement benefits affect lost-wage reimbursement?

Golden does not require you to use up paid time off before receiving eligible lost-wage reimbursement. If you choose to use PTO for a covered absence, it may be reimbursed under your agreement. If short-term disability or employer-paid leave replaces part of your wages, escrow covers the remaining eligible shortfall. Documented gross earnings and the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement determine the amount. Tell Golden and your attorney about your employer benefits before signing so the arrangements are clear.

Why does Golden reimburse documented gross lost wages instead of net pay?

Golden calculates lost-wage reimbursement using documented gross wages because net take-home pay varies based on withholding elections, benefit deductions, retirement contributions, and individual tax circumstances. Reducing a reimbursement by an assumed tax amount could leave a Surrogate under-reimbursed if that estimate does not match how the payment is ultimately treated.

Golden does not attempt to calculate a Surrogate’s personal tax withholding or determine her final tax liability. Applicable paystubs and work schedules are used to document the employment income that was actually missed. Tax treatment of compensation and reimbursements depends on individual circumstances, so every Surrogate should retain her payment records and consult a qualified tax professional.

Insurance, Expenses, and Escrow

Who pays for a Surrogate's maternity and life insurance?

The Intended Parents do, and Golden coordinates it. Golden pays for an expert review of the Surrogate’s existing health-insurance policy. If separate maternity coverage is needed, the Intended Parents fund an applicable policy and the related surrogacy medical expenses according to the agreement. Golden also arranges the highest life-insurance coverage available to each Surrogate, with a required minimum of $750,000 for her chosen beneficiary or beneficiaries, at no cost to her. Coverage takes effect before embryo-transfer medications or treatment begin and continues through pregnancy and for three months after the pregnancy ends, or twelve months for New York Surrogates, under the policy terms. None of these premiums are deducted from your compensation.

Do I need my own health insurance to become a Golden Surrogate?

No. Having your own policy can simplify the journey, but it is not required. Golden pays for an expert review of any existing policy to confirm whether it covers a surrogacy pregnancy, since many plans contain a surrogacy exclusion that is easy to overlook. If no applicable policy exists, or the policy excludes surrogacy, the Intended Parents purchase appropriate maternity coverage according to the journey arrangements. The Surrogate does not pay for that required coverage. This review happens before the medical protocol begins, so coverage is settled rather than discovered during pregnancy.

What happens if my insurance changes during the journey?

Notify Golden promptly. A change of employer, a plan year renewal, a new plan network, or a lapse in coverage can all affect how surrogacy-related care is billed. Golden and the applicable insurance professionals review the change, confirm how the new situation applies to the pregnancy, and coordinate the appropriate next steps under the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. Because the Intended Parents are responsible for surrogacy-related medical costs, an early notice protects you from unexpected billing. The specific remedy depends on your policy and the agreement rather than a single predetermined replacement product.

Who pays my surrogacy-related medical bills, premiums, deductibles, and copayments?

The Intended Parents do, through escrow, according to the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. That includes surrogacy-related hospital and provider bills, applicable insurance premiums for coverage arranged for the journey, deductibles, copayments, and other medical expenses covered by the agreement. These payments are made on your behalf and are not deducted from your $70,000 minimum compensation, and they are not cash compensation to you. Send Golden any bill or explanation of benefits you receive so it can be reviewed and routed for payment rather than sitting unpaid in your name.

What expenses are reimbursed in addition to compensation?

In addition to base compensation and standard benefits, Intended Parents cover legal fees, medical bills, mileage, childcare for qualifying appointments, documented lost wages, approved travel expenses, and other reimbursable costs outlined in the surrogacy agreement.

You also do not need to live near our team to receive this level of support. If you are wondering whether the agency itself needs to be close to you, read our guide on why a surrogacy agency does not need to be local.

Who pays for travel, companion expenses, meals, mileage, and childcare?

The Intended Parents cover approved journey travel through escrow. Approved mileage is reimbursed at the applicable IRS business mileage rate, as provided in your agreement. Golden’s published reimbursement structure also includes childcare at $14 per hour and up to $250 per day for qualifying overnight care, and a meal allowance of $50 per day plus $25 per day for a companion when applicable. Other approved travel and appointment expenses are established in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. Approval and documentation requirements come first, so confirm travel arrangements with your coordinator before booking rather than assuming an expense qualifies.

What documentation is required for reimbursements, and how are they paid?

The required documentation depends on the expense. It may include receipts, invoices, mileage records, paystubs, work schedules, employer records, or documentation from a provider. Submit records as you go, since a contemporaneous receipt is far easier to approve than a reconstruction months later. Approved payments are released by the independent escrow provider according to the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement and the escrow procedures. Golden assists with coordination and review, but Golden does not hold or disburse the money. Keep copies of everything you submit for your own records and for your tax professional.

How are compensation funds protected through escrow?

Your compensation and approved expenses are funded in advance into an account held by an independent escrow provider, separate from Golden and separate from the Intended Parent(s). Payments are released according to the milestones in your signed agreement, and Golden never takes custody of escrow funds. Golden’s complete guide to surrogacy escrow explains how the accounts work.

Does becoming a Surrogate cost me anything?

No. Applying is free, and the costs of the journey are the responsibility of the Intended Parent(s). That includes your own attorney, screening, medical bills, approved travel, and approved journey expenses, all funded through the independent escrow account. Out-of-pocket spending should be limited to costs you choose to incur outside the agreement, and even then many everyday journey expenses, such as mileage and childcare for appointments, are reimbursable when documented and approved.

Taxes and Special Circumstances

Is Surrogate compensation taxable, and does Golden issue a 1099?

Golden does not issue 1099 forms and does not provide tax advice. Tax treatment of surrogacy compensation depends on your individual circumstances, including how payments are characterized and how your state treats them, so Golden recommends that every Surrogate consult a qualified tax professional before her journey begins and again at filing time. Keep your escrow statements, payment records, and reimbursement documentation so your tax professional can review the actual payments rather than estimates.

Could Surrogate compensation affect government assistance, disability benefits, a pension, or a retirement plan?

It can. Compensation may affect eligibility for income-based government assistance, disability programs, pension arrangements, retirement-plan rules, or other benefits, because many of those programs measure household income or resources. Golden cannot determine your individual eligibility and does not provide legal, tax, or benefits advice. If you receive or may qualify for any of these programs, speak with the applicable program administrator, a benefits professional, an attorney, or a financial adviser before entering a journey, so you can plan the timing and structure of payments with full information.

What additional payments may apply for bed rest, a C-section, multiples, or other circumstances?

Golden’s published structure includes a $350-per-week bed rest benefit, $5,000 for a C-section, and $10,000 per additional child for multiples. Approved Surrogate and spouse or partner lost wages are reimbursed as documented gross lost wages, verified using applicable paystubs and work schedules.

Rare-circumstance amounts for invasive procedures, diagnostic testing, pregnancy loss, and loss of reproductive organs are listed above. The precise terms, documentation requirements, and any applicable limitations are established in the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement and funded through escrow by the Intended Parent(s).

Why do Surrogate compensation totals differ so much between agencies?

Because agencies advertise different things inside one headline number. A quoted total may combine guaranteed base compensation, routine benefits, reimbursements, lost wages, travel expenses, conditional medical-event payments, and rare circumstances that many Surrogates will never experience. Two programs can advertise similar totals while paying very different guaranteed amounts.

Golden separates its $70,000 standard minimum from reimbursements and uncommon circumstances so you can see what is routinely included. When you compare offers, ask which portion is guaranteed and which is conditional. Golden’s Surrogate compensation red flags guide walks through the questions to ask.
